Challenges getting Water for Domestic Use

Fetching water has traditionally been a demanding task delegated to women and youth, who must also ensure livestock remain fed and well-cared for.

Access to clean water represents an immense and urgent need in the community. At present, a sole seasonal pool functions as the central source for drinking, domestic use, and animal consumption.

Water contamination constitutes a severe threat that undermines health and cuts lives tragically short. The lack of accessible clean water has compelled many into rural-urban migration in search of this basic necessity.

The dearth of reliable, safe water takes an unacceptable toll, and addressing this need could transform Nanderema life.

Raising Funds for a great cause

On the 8th of June, 2024, the Nanderema Organizing Committee, together with members the community, wellwishers, the local administration, and friends at large, came together raise funds for the Nanderema Health Centre. The event was chaired by Hon Chris Mandu Mandu, among other distinguished guests.

Students from the local primary and secondary schools graced the occasion and entertained the guests with songs, dance, and skits.

To Access Healthcare Facilities…

Women walk far get to a health facility. To the East is Rumbiye Dispensary which is 6 kilometers away, to the West is Sio Port which is 10 kilometers away, to the south is Port Victoria Hospital which is 25 kilometers away and to the North is Nangina which is 12 kilometers away.

Typically, these mothers have no incomes to enable them get on an alternative transport. They often have to carry sick babies with them across the long distances on foot.

The pain of seeking medical care

This young mother of four young children whom she can hardly support harrowingly treks long distances to secure medical attention.

The Plight of the Elderly…

Old women who fall sick often suffer greatly at Nanderema. Most, having no helpers bear the brunt of poverty, old age, and disease. This community needs a facility that can be easily accessed and without trouble. The lady pictured is sick, tired, and in need of help.

Old people have very serious challenges when they are sick. Most cases it is there grandchildren who look after them. Most of the sons are away in urban areas seeking for jobs and daughters are married elsewhere.

The elderly also grapple with food insecurity. Many rely on wellwishers and handouts for daily sustenance.

Perilous Adventures…

For the sickly, weak and the elderly getting to nearby health facilities is often a dangerous and daunting activity.

The available mode of transport is the local motorcycle, ridden over rough surfaces and unpaved roads. Accidents are common. Nanderema greatly needs a health facility to help its residents during times of dire need.

The Facility’s Perimeter, Gate and current progress

Work on the site is progressing in earnest as we have erected a gate. There is also a perimeter fence running along the property’s perimeter, to secure it.
